Simple Guide to Measuring for Curtains
Choosing the perfect curtains can transform a room, bringing warmth, style, and personality. But first, you need the right measurements! Here’s an easy, step-by-step guide to help you measure for curtains that fit beautifully.
Step 1: Decide on Curtain Length
Curtain length is all about the look you want:
- Sill Length: Curtains hang just below the windowsill—ideal for casual spaces like kitchens. Sill length curtains should ideally measure 1cm above the sill.
- Below Sill: Ends around 15cm below the sill, great for a neat, tailored look.
- Floor Length: Curtains hover just above the floor for a more formal, polished finish. We recommend 1cm above the floor.
- Above a Radiator: If your window has a radiator below it your curtains should finish 2-3cm above the radiator to avoid heat being blocked by the fabric.
Step 2: Measure Curtain Width
Measure the width of your curtain rod or track. Curtains look best when they aren’t stretched flat. To achieve a beautiful, gathered effect, calculate a width that’s about 1.5 to 2 times the length of the rod.
For example, if your pole or track width is:
- Up to 167cm (66”)- Choose 130cm (51”) curtain width
- 167cm (66”) - 182cm (71”) - Choose the 167cm (66”) curtain width;
- 182cm (71”) and above - Choose the 228cm (90”) curtain width.
.
Step 3: Measure Curtain Length (Drop)
Using a steel tape measure:
- Starting Point for Pencil Pleat Curtains: Measure from the top of the track or bottom of the rings if using a pole. (The pole/track is normally around 15cm / 6 inches above the window.)
- Starting Point for Eyelet Curtains: Measure from the top of the pole. (The pole is normally around 15cm / 6 inches above the window.)
- Desired Length: Measure down to your chosen length (sill, below-sill, or floor).
Tip: For added height and a grander look, position the rod a few inches above the window frame.
Pencil Pleat Measuring Instructions
General Notes:
- Curtains can be hung on a pole or track using curtain hooks (hooks not included).
- There are three hook positions on the header tape, allowing you to adjust how the curtains sit against the track or pole.
- The specified drop measurement is taken from the top row of hook pockets to the bottom edge of the curtain.
- Important: Ensure you are happy with the design and color before pulling in the strings, as adjusted tapes cannot be returned. (Strings are pre-knotted to help with adjustment before hanging.)
Eyelet Measuring Instructions
General Notes:
- Eyelet curtains are designed to be used with a curtain pole.
- Each eyelet has a standard diameter of 40mm and a satin nickel finish.
- The specified drop is measured from the top inside edge of the eyelet to the bottom of the curtain.
For all curtain orders, you will receive 2 curtains (a pair), each measuring the flat width specified.
Measuring for curtains doesn’t have to be complicated—just follow these steps, and you’ll have a beautiful, perfectly-fitted look for your home! Happy decorating!
